Explanation of Votes

#1 - Weaken Death Penalty
Recorded vote on passage to engrossment of SB 85. The bill would have created a new reduced sentence of life without parole for individuals convicted of capital offenses.
TEF Position: Oppose
Status: failed in the House

#2 - Hate Crimes
Recorded vote on suspension of the rules to consider on second reading SB 87. This vote guaranteed passage of the bill by advancing it with the 2/3 vote necessary for floor consideration. Due to majority support on the floor, securing the 2/3-suspension vote was, in effect, the key vote for passage. The bill enhances penalties for criminals who select their victims for reasons of prejudice or bias, and makes sexual preference a protected class for the first time under Texas law.

#6 - Children's Medical Privacy
Recorded vote on third reading of SB 1237. The bill would have changed the Texas immunization-tracking registry from an opt-in to an opt-out system, making it harder for parents to protect their children's medical privacy.
TEF Position: Oppose
Status: failed in the House

#7 - Right to Elect Judges
