Houston Elects First Homosexual Mayor
Houston became the largest U.S. city to elect an openly gay mayor, with voters handing a solid victory to City Controller Annise Parker after a hotly contestedHouston Mayor Annise Parker, right, walks onto the stage with her partner, Kathy Hubbard, during a public inauguration ceremony Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 in Houston. Parker defeated former city attorney Gene Locke with 53.6% of the vote in a race that had a turnout of only 16.5%. "This election has changed the world for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community. Just as it is about transforming the lives of all Houstonians for the better, and that's what my administration will be about," Parker told supporters after Locke conceded defeat. Parker has never made a secret or an issue of her sexual orientation. But it became the focus of the race after anti-gay activists and conservative religious groups endorsed Locke and sent out mailers condemning Parker's "homosexual behavior."  Gay and lesbian political organizations nationwide rallied to support Parker by raising money for her campaign and making calls urging people to vote. Several other U.S. cities, including Portland, Ore., Providence, R.I., and Cambridge, Mass., have openly gay mayors, but none as large as Houston.

Abbot Fights Nebraska's Tax Breaks in Health Care Bill
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott (www.oag.state.tx.us)Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is vowing to fight what he called an “outrageous” decision to give Nebraska multimillion dollar tax breaks as part of a deal to get enough votes for the health care overhaul that passed the Senate on Christmas Eve morning. Abbott and ten other state attorneys general are already exploring legal options, with other states possibly joining in. Abbott said the provision, which ensured NB Sen. Ben Nelson vote on the massive health care bill, was unfair and possibly unconstitutional. “From a fundamental fairness perspective this is both wrong and outrageous,” said Abbott.  “If it is upheld, then there is really no limitations in actions that Congress can take where they literally they’re taking taxpayer dollars from one state to another. “ Reports estimate the cost of the Nebraska provision between $45 and $10 million dollars.

Texas Teachers Warned Against Being "Heterosexist"
Candidates for certification to teach in public schools in Texas are being told that they will be held accountable for any "heterosexist" leanings and must become agents working to change society, according to one candidate who was alarmed by the demands. The applicant, who requested anonymity for fear of repercussions, said part of the teachings on multiculturalism required him to read several online postings about the issue inside the education industry. One warns "teachers and administrators must be held accountable for practices deemed to be racist, sexist, heterosexist, classist, or in any other way discriminatory." And a second warned that educators must not define education as the basic skills. "How do we create a better world? How do we do more than simply survive? As educators, we must help people to become committed to social change," the article demanded. The teacher candidate said the studies were mandated by the Region 10 service center for the public school educators' program.

Spokeswoman Debbie Ratcliffe at the Texas Education Agency said the state rules require teacher preparation programs to cover 17 curriculum topics, but not multiculturalism. "While we establish the broad rules that are to be followed, we do not write or approve a training program's curriculum," she said. She said the articles, if part of the program, were chosen at the region level.

Texas is the Fastest Growing State
Even the nasty recession couldn’t derail Texas’ status as the fastest-growing state, according to U.S. census estimates released recently. Texas gained 478,000 people in the 12 months starting July 1, 2008. California had the next largest growth (378,000), followed by North Carolina (134,000), Georgia (131,000) and Florida (114,000). With 37 million residents, CA remains the most populous state. Texas is second with 24.8 million. The Lone Star State probably will pass the 25 million mark in the 2010 census said, Steve Murdock, a former director of the U.S. Census Bureau. “This had been a simply phenomenal decade of growth for Texas, “ he said.
