Governor Rick Perry and SBOE Chairman Grace Shore Encouraged to Promote Pro-Family Principles in Education

1-24-01

One of the most important powers of a state executive is the power to appoint. The significance of the power of appointment is reflected in the old political adage, "Personnel is policy." Unfortunately, Governor Rick Perry's appointment of Grace Shore as the Chairman of the State Board of Education on Monday represents a shift away from the common sense conservative principles and policies that he has historically espoused.

Ms. Shore's record as a member of the State Board of Education has been less than acceptable to conservatives. She has repeatedly voted against pro-family measures put forward by conservative board members addressing issues such as parental rights, strengthening reading and education standards, and ensuring the integrity and productivity of the Permanent School Fund.

Texas Eagle Forum's goal is to promote sound educational and economic principles that will positively affect our children's education, including the retention of the elected State Board of Education's oversight of the Permanent School Fund. We call on Governor Rick Perry and Chairman Grace Shore to join us in advancing strong pro-family policies that will protect parental rights, advance strong educational standards, and defend the Permanent School Fund against unwarranted and unjustified raiding for purposes other than directly providing quality education for our children.

ACTION: Please contact Governor Perry and Chairman Shore and encourage them to work for the advancement of parental rights and strong educational standards, and the protection of the State Board of Education's authority to make decisions concerning the Permanent School Fund.
