Notwithstanding a crisis, this will be your final update for this session. Legislative action is down to the wire. Hundreds of bills have been killed because time has run out for legislators to act according to their rules. Next week more deadlines will kill more bills until the 28th, the last day for the House to consider Senate amendments and either concur or send bills to conference committees. Sine die is May 31st.

ABORTION
On Monday, May 17th we expect SB 30, the bill that would require parental notification before an abortion is performed on minor girls, to be considered on the House floor. It has already passed the Senate and has finally passed out of Chairman Wolens’ State Affairs Committee, but in a weaker version than the bill that passed the Senate. The extra bypasses have been removed during negotiations, which is good. The penalties for abortionists have also been removed, and that is NOT acceptable. That essentially turns the bill into an “abortionist protection” bill.

I will be joining other pro-family leaders in this battle in Austin against politicians who are willing to compromise LIFE in order to gain mere political rhetoric. We, however, are committed to a PRO-LIFE bill or no bill at all.

You can call your State Representative and ask him to vote for SB 30 ONLY if it has ONLY a judicial bypass (no additional bypasses for counselors or family members, etc.), AND it MUST have criminal penalties for abortionists. 512-463-4630

SCHOOL-BASED CLINICS
HB 2202 by Tillery and SB 1454 by West, has been certified for the Senate Intent Calendar. Call your Senators and ask them to VOTE NO on HB 2202 because schools have enough to do in educating our children. It is a parental responsibility and right to care for our children’s health. 512-463-4630

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
A BAD bill has gone to the Governor for his signature. Ask him to VETO SB 1746 so legislators can pass a SOUND environmental education bill next session. 800-252-9600

HATE CRIMES
Unless “hate crimes” legislation is attached as an amendment to a viable bill, it is DEAD for this session. Our volunteer lobbyist Carolyn Galloway deserves our THANK YOU for her courageous and steadfast work against these bills. You can thank Carolyn: TEF, Carolyn Galloway, P.O. VOUCHERS
Education “vouchers” can be attached as an amendment to another bill, but self-standing legislation is dead. Some are attempting to grant a franchise tax credit for corporations that give funds to private schools, but we’re opposing this for two reasons:
